No Dogs on the Spit

The Federally protected Piping Plovers and Terns have returned to their home on the Spit for the 2025 season. Mass Audubon Society has started the NO DOGS on the Spit policy. Please respect the roped off areas on the Spit so the birds can nest.

Save Popponesset Bay

Save Popponesset Bay is the owner of 3/4 of the Spit, with the eastern 1/4, owned by Mass Audubon. The Popponesset Spit is a fragile, natural barrier peninsula and wildlife sanctuary that protects Popponesset Bay from Nantucket Sound, Mashpee’s watershed, and other land throughout Mashpee and Cotuit. Since its most depleted state in 2012, Save Popponesset Bay has raised and invested hundreds of thousands of dollars for trucking sand, dredging sand from the Popponesset Bay Approach Channel leading to Nantucket Sound, and the purchasing/planting of dune grass to anchor the new sand for the Spit. We also provide security in partnership with PBA and our partner Mass Audubon. These dredging and construction activities are critical to keeping the area healthy and safe for all that enjoy it.
